Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds – with the same chemical composition, hardness, and optical properties. The difference is not in quality, but in how they are created. Here, we go through what distinguishes them, so you can make a choice that feels right for you.

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds have been formed deep within the Earth over billions of years, under extremely high pressure and temperature. Each stone is unique and carries a fascinating geological history that stretches far back in time.

It is precisely this rarity and unique origin story that makes natural diamonds so special to many. They have historically retained their value well over time and are often regarded as much an investment as a symbol of love.

COLIÈNE standard

W (Wesselton/H) in color, SI (Slightly Included) in clarity, and exclusively Excellent in cut. All our natural diamonds are conflict-free and certified according to the Kimberley Process.

Lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments that replicate the natural conditions deep within the earth. The result is a real diamond that is chemically, optically, and physically identical to a natural stone – the same hardness, the same brilliance, the same clarity.

There are two main methods for growing diamonds: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). Both produce high-quality, authentic diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds often offer a lower price for the same size and quality, making them an attractive option for many.

COLIENE standard

F–G (Top Wesselton) in color, VS (Very Slightly Included) in clarity, and exclusively Excellent in cut. Higher specifications than our natural diamonds – at a lower price.

FAQ

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, optically, and physically identical to natural diamonds. They consist of pure carbon with the same crystal structure, hardness, and brilliance. The only difference is how and where they are created.

No. It's impossible to distinguish a natural diamond from a lab-grown one with the naked eye – or even with a jeweller's loupe. The difference can only be identified with specialised equipment in a gemological laboratory.

It completely depends on what is important to you. If you value geological history, rarity, and lasting value, a natural diamond may be the right choice. If you want a larger stone at a lower price, or value minimizing the environmental impact of mining, a lab-grown diamond might be a better fit. Both are excellent choices.

Lab-grown diamonds have a limited secondary market compared to natural diamonds. The prices of lab-grown stones have also decreased over time as production technology advances. If long-term value is important to you, a natural diamond might be a safer choice.

Absolutely. All our ring models are available with both natural and lab-grown diamonds. Our team will be happy to help you compare the options for the specific ring you are interested in.

Which diamond suits you?

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same chemical composition, hardness, and brilliance. The difference lies in their origin, price, and personal preference. Natural diamonds offer a unique geological history and good value retention, while lab-grown diamonds give you the opportunity to choose a larger stone at a lower price. We are happy to help you explore both options.
