Five Decisions on Your Way to the Ring

Choosing an engagement or wedding ring doesn't have to be complicated. Essentially, it comes down to five choices: type, model, metal, diamond, and stone size. We'll briefly describe them here, so you can quickly get a feel for what suits you.

If you need to delve deeper, there are links to our in-depth guides under each step. And if you're unsure – get in touch, and we'll help you.

Step 1: Select ring type

The type sets the tone for the entire ring. At Coliène, most people start with three main types – the choice is primarily about which expression you are drawn to.

Solitaire
Solitaire

A single diamond in focus on a plain band. A classic and timeless choice where all light falls on the stone. For many, it is the obvious choice for an engagement ring.

Halo
Halo

A centre stone surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds. This provides more lustre and makes the stone appear larger. A choice for those who want a richer look.

Three stones
Three stones

Three diamonds in a row, where the center stone is flanked by two smaller stones. Creates a fuller look and a natural balance. A choice for those who want something more expressive, with subtle symbolism.

Smooth
Smooth

A ring without stones, with a calm and stripped-down expression. Traditionally used as a wedding ring, but just as suitable as an engagement ring for those who prefer simplicity.

Step 2: Select Model

Step 2: Select Model

Once you've chosen the type, the next step is to find the right model. It is the model that determines the ring's profile – its width, height, and how it sits on your finger. This is where the ring starts to feel like yours.

Two rings of the same type can feel completely different depending on their design. A solitaire can be delicate and discreet or more prominent. A plain band can be straight or slightly domed, with a softer expression.

Tip: Browse our models and save some favorites. Often, it's a small detail – like a domed profile or a narrower shank – that determines what feels right.

Step 3: Choose metal

The metal determines the ring's color and expression. We offer gold in 18k, 14k, and 9k, and white gold in 18k and 14k – always in recycled metal, crafted by experienced goldsmiths.

Tip: Start with what you already wear. Gold has a warm, classic tone, while white gold gives a cooler and more understated look.

18k gold

75% gold. Richest in color and expression – the classic choice if you want a deep, warm gold tone.

14k gold

58.5% gold. A balanced combination of colour, durability, and price. A natural choice for daily wear.

9k gold

37.5% gold. A more affordable option, still real gold – a great entry point if you want to keep the price down without compromising on the feel. Provides a slightly lighter color tone and high wear resistance.

18k white gold

75% gold, rhodium-plated as standard. Modern, cool surface that enhances the diamond's brilliance.

14k white gold

58.5% gold, rhodium-plated as standard. The same bright expression, with slightly higher durability and a more accessible price point.

COLIENE-standard

All rhodium plating is included in our white gold rings. Over time, the surface can be refreshed to maintain its lustre – a service we offer if needed.

Step 4: Choose diamond

This step applies if you have chosen a solitaire or halo. For plain rings, you can skip directly to the next step.

You choose between natural and lab-grown diamonds. Both are real diamonds, certified according to international standards and with the same brilliance. The difference lies in origin - and in price.

Natural diamond

Formed deep within the earth over millions of years. Each stone is unique in its history, which many see as part of its value. The price is slightly higher than for a lab-grown diamond of equivalent size.

Lab-grown diamond

Created in a laboratory under the same conditions as in nature – chemically and optically identical to a natural diamond, but often more affordable. A way to choose a larger or better cut diamond within the same budget.

Here's how you can think about it

Let your budget and preferences guide your choice. If you want to maximize size and quality within a given price range, lab-grown diamonds are often the way to go. If you value origin and history, a natural diamond might be the right choice.

Both are equally real – it's about what feels right for you.

All our diamonds are conflict-free and certified.

Step 5: Choose stone size

The final choice concerns the size of the stone – the carat weight. A larger stone has more presence, but the price increases quickly with every tenth of a carat.

A few guidelines:
– Under 0.5 ct: discreet and elegant, well-suited for everyday wear.
– 0.5–1.0 ct: a classic mid-range, clearly visible but balanced.
– Over 1.0 ct: more prominent and defines the ring's expression

Here's how you can think about it
Size is closely linked to budget. Start with a level that feels right for you and let it guide your choice – in combination with your diamond selection from the previous step. Lab-grown diamonds often make it possible to choose a larger stone within the same budget.

Tip: A slightly smaller, well-cut diamond often has more brilliance than a larger stone with poorer cut. Quality over size is a good rule of thumb.

Let the budget guide the final decisions

The first steps – type, style, and metal – are primarily about taste and how the ring will be worn in everyday life. The final choices – diamond and size – are more influenced by budget.

A good way to think is to start at the right end: determine a reasonable level and let it guide your choice of diamond and size. This makes it easier to find the right balance, without having to compromise on the overall look.

Our rings start from around 2,500 SEK and extend into the premium segment. On each product page, you can easily see how the price is affected by different choices of metal and stone size.
