The choice between white gold and gold is one of the most important when selecting a ring. Both are classic but differ in expression – where gold gives a warm feeling and white gold a more discreet, modern impression. Here, we guide you to the right choice.
What exactly is white gold?
White gold is an alloy of gold and other metals, in our case, silver and palladium, which gives the metal its bright, silver-colored tone. The clear white surface comes from a rhodium plating – a precious metal that gives the ring its bright luster and simultaneously protects the underlying metal.
At Coliène, rhodium plating is standard on all white gold – nothing you need to add.
Rose gold — the Swedish classic
Rose gold, often called Swedish gold, is the most traditional and popular alloy for jewelry in Sweden. Its warm, slightly reddish tone provides a soft shimmer that only gets more beautiful over time.
Color and character are affected by how the gold is alloyed. Pure gold is mixed with other metals to create the right balance between color and durability. A higher proportion of copper gives rose gold its depth and warm tone, while a higher proportion of silver gives what is traditionally called yellow gold – with a lighter, more classic golden color.
At Coliène, we work with rose gold in 18k, 14k, and 9k. 18k has the richest tone and consists of 75 percent pure gold. 14k is a balanced classic, while 9k has a slightly more discreet color and a higher proportion of other metals, which also makes it extra durable.
Durability and maintenance
Both white gold and gold are durable materials that are well-suited for daily use.
The rhodium-plated surface of white gold may eventually need to be refreshed to maintain its original luster – something we, of course, help with.
Rose gold develops a natural patina over time that gives the metal more depth and character. Many appreciate this expression, but the ring can always be cleaned or polished if you prefer a more polished surface.
Skin tone and style — what suits you?
A common guideline is that warm skin tones are often enhanced by rose gold, while cooler skin tones harmonize with white gold.
But ultimately, your style is what matters. Many are drawn to contrasts, others to what blends in. The most important thing is what you feel comfortable in – that's what makes the ring right.
Price — what affects it?
The choice between white gold and gold generally does not affect the price. For the same carat weight, the materials are at a similar level.
Instead, what drives the price is the design – such as the choice of stone, size, number of settings, and the ring's width.
Therefore, choose the metal based on what you like and want to wear over time, rather than based on price.
