Care for your ring

Your engagement or wedding ring is a piece of jewelry you wear every day – and with proper care, it will look just as beautiful in ten years as it does today. Here, we share simple, practical tips to keep your ring in top condition, as well as advice on what to avoid.

Everyday habits that make a difference

The best care tips aren't about advanced cleaning products – but about simple everyday habits. By considering when you take off your ring, you can avoid most normal wear and tear.

Remove your ring when you: exercise or lift weights (metal can bend and stones can come loose), wash your hands with strong soap or hand sanitizer, use detergents or chemicals.

Store smartly: Have a designated place for your ring at home – a small jewelry dish or ring stand. Avoid placing the ring loosely in a pocket or bag where it can be scratched by keys or other objects.

Cleaning at home – step-by-step

We recommend cleaning your ring at home regularly. It only takes a few minutes and makes a big difference to its brilliance.

1. Soak

Place the ring in a bowl with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.

2. Brush gently

Use a toothbrush to gently brush around the diamond, under the setting, and along the band. Dirt often accumulates under the diamond.

3. Rinse

Rinse the ring under lukewarm running water. Tip: place a strainer in the sink or do it over a bowl – not directly over the drain.

4. Dry

Gently wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. Allow the ring to air dry completely before wearing it again.

Avoid this

Some common cleaning methods can actually damage your ring. Here's what you should avoid:

Harsh cleaning agents
Avoid bleach, acetone, ammonia, and aggressive chemicals. They can damage both the metal and the diamond's setting.

Toothpaste and baking soda
Although it's a common myth, toothpaste and baking soda are not recommended as they can scratch the surface of the gold.

Tips by metal type

Gold

Gold is a relatively soft material that can scratch with daily use. This is completely normal – over time, superficial scratches create a beautiful character known as patina. Clean with lukewarm water and dish soap as described above. If you want to restore the surface, a gold polishing cloth can provide a nice shine.

White gold (rhodium-plated)

All Coliène white gold rings come with rhodium plating as standard – this is what gives them their bright, silvery surface. Rhodium plating naturally wears off over time and may need to be reapplied after a few years, depending on how much the ring is exposed to wear. We offer rhodium plating as a service. Avoid polishing white gold with abrasive cloths as this can remove the rhodium layer more quickly.

Professional ring care

If needed, we are happy to help you refresh your ring. We will check that the setting is secure and polish it so that it regains its original luster. For white gold rings, we also offer rhodium plating.

Storage and Travel

When you are not wearing your ring, store it in a dry, protected place – preferably in the ring box you received with your purchase, or in a soft jewelry pouch. Avoid placing rings loosely in a jewelry box where they can scratch each other.

With simple, regular care, your ring will retain its luster and brilliance throughout the years. Do you have any questions about care or would you like to book a professional inspection? We are happy to help you.
